If shooters pull out the rifle and aim it at a target, the only thing important is their target. The rest of the world fades away. When the thought of winning a lot of money in their heads, their instincts will trigger. If their years of waking upearly, putting in additional hours of training and even sacrificing your favorite foods are worth it in this moment. It is to this moment that 19-year-old Ayushi Podder is training for!
Each time Ayushi is shooting, her aim is greater than the "Bullseye" shot. She is aiming at the Podium Finish! Every time she presses her finger on the trigger, she shoots the bullet to her dream of the Olympic medal that hangs on her neck, with the tri-colored flag flying over her.
Aayushi is a junior rifle shooter , and the most recent young sensation in shooting from India to make waves in the sport , following Manu Bhaker and Gayathri nityanadam, Mehuli Ghosh and others. Born on the 23rd day of October in 1999, Aayushi is from Sheoraphuli, Hooghly of West Bengal.
Aayushi's enthusiasm and skill in shooting comes through her father Pankaj Podder, who himself is an former Indian shooter as well as an International Shooting Sport Federation ( ISSF) licensed and accredited coach.
Schooling Days And Sacrificed Dreams
Aayushi was completely dedicated to her studying during her time in the Techno Indian Public School. It was surprising that even though she was exposed to shooting at a young age, she displayed almost zero passion for shooting.
At the age of seven, Aayushi was seven years old, she completed a portfolio with the intention of becoming an actor or model. She also learned to dance at a Classical Odisha style and participated in school-related events.
In this time of her life, Pankaj used to travel across the country to participate in matches. Aayushi did not think that one day she'd follow in his path. As a scholar who excelled in school, Aayushi wished to study MBBS as she grew older.
Start of Shooting Career
Things changed shortly after her father asked her to try shooting. Pankaj confessed to his dream of watching his daughter follow in his steps. "When the daughter I had was only five year old, I was thinking I could make her an shot Olympic gold medalist" Pankaj explains.
She began training to help her father. In just seven days of acquiring her air rifle Ayushi had already been a champion at the state level!
"It it was the first time I competed in a event which was also my first time being a winner!" she says, with excitement evident in her voice. Her first major win spurred Junior Podder to take up shooting.
With her father's strong support that was a guarantee, there was no turning back. As time passed by, Aayushi immersed herself into shooting and discovered an exciting new sport to shed blood for. As she demonstrated her determination and enthusiasm to shoot, the school's teachers and principal also began to lend their support to her as she embarked on her next adventure.
To excel in the field of shooting the ball, a player must have maximum concentration. For Ayushi her concentration and focus came effortlessly. This is the reason she could get excellent scores. "I'm proficient in academics. Focus and concentration are crucial and these two qualities assisted me shooting significantly."
Ayushi has also realized the importance of perfection both in her sport and in her everyday life. In the beginning of her working out, the father of her told her "Ayushi is the only one who can take a best sight picture". These words have been a huge help to her on the international stage. They've been incorporated into her brain. "Perfection is important," she tells.
After becoming the state champion, Ayushi won the pre-national championship in junior-senior youth the month following. Within one time, Aayushi has secured her spot to participate at the Indian team camp. Soon after, she was selected for the Asian air gun team, and in the following year, she earned her first international gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2016, Suhl, Germany.
The challenges faced by Indian athletes
Achieving success as an athlete in India isn't as simple. It's true that Ayushi isn't an exception. She has a lot of forgotten stories to share about her trips to various locations for competitions. One of them happened on she returned from Asian Junior Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Ayushi as well as her teammates arrived at 5 am at New Delhi from a long and exhausting journey. This is when she finds out that she will be competing in the 11 AM slot for competing in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions competition at the All India Inter-University Championship. In the midst of sleep and hunger the young shooter took part in the competition and was able to take home bronze.
When she mentioned the situation, Ayushi opened up about her feelings without regret. She doesn't blame her fatigue or sleep deprivation for her loss. Also, she does not blame lack of planning and organisation by the organizers.
This morning, Aayushi laughs it off. This is another item on a lengthy list of organizational and structural issues that athletes have faced and continue to face in the system of sports in India.
In the World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Ayushi had to endure a gap of eight days between her arrival until matchday. It was not possible to train for the entire eight days because of the scheduling of other events. Furthermore, her rifle was outdated. This led to a bad experience at the event.
In addition Ayushi's father, as well as her coach was not able to accompany her on her travels due to financial problems. Another issue facing athletes in India in the present. They are faced with financial pressures to purchase equipment, travel for training, eat an adequate diet, and so many more.
The balance between education and shooting
Despite having to balance academics with shooting lessons and traveling around the world to attend events, Aayushi's grades in school didn't drop. After graduation from high school she decided to take the field of Humanities and was able to take time to concentrate on her the study of her subject and shooting.
Presently, Ayushi Podder is pursuing her undergrad degree in Public Administration at Punjab University at the same as training and participating in competitions. But, Ayushi believes that it could not have been achieved without the support of her college and the management.
Ayushi is not able to use an attendance bar because of her participation in the Sports quota. She can exercise all year long and is only required to sit for tests. If the competitions or choices clash with her tests The college schedules specific dates to allow her to take the test.
A one-day in the life Ayushi Podder
As her father did, Ayushi travels a lot. All through all of the time, Ayushi is a participant in at least ten national competitions. There are also trials for selection, and up or three competitions internationally the course of a year. Apart from her travels to various competitions, she often goes to Delhi to train in Dr Karni Shooting range. Dr Karni Shooting range, because it's the only place in which she is able to train for the 50-meter categories.
Ayushi is also required to travel to Chandigarh for university every day. In between training, competitions, and college, she's not capable of staying at her home.
A typical day for the youthful shooter in West Bengal begins at 5.30 morning. She rises, gets fresh up and then has a quick warming-up. In 7.30 am, Aayushi is on the breakfast table. After breakfast, she heads off to train.
