 Professional athletes make all or a portion of their money by taking part in sporting events, in either a team or as members of a team. Professional athletes generally specialize in one sport including Australian Rules Football, basketball boxing, cricket, netball, golf league soccer, swimming tennis, and more while some may also take part in multiple sports.

 It is possible to be a sportsperson without formal qualifications. However, a high level of knowledge in your preferred sport is required. Sportspeople in a team sport are under the guidance of a coach whose responsibility is to enhance and improve their abilities. Individual sportspeople typically find coaches to help with their journey to elite. The athletes who are currently at school could choose to further develop their skills by attending a specialist sports high school that combines traditional school subjects and specialized athletics coaching and competitions across a variety of sports.Many organizations in sports offer traineeships to athletes who are aspiring to be top performers in specific sports. Training is also available in related areas such as coaching, sport development, refereeing/umpiring and sports administration.Sportspeople may study courses in sports-related areas such as sports science, human movement studies, physiotherapy, sports administration, sports coaching, sports journalism, physical education and sports psychology. But, these studies are not essential for employment as a professional athlete. Subjects and prerequisites can vary between institutions,

 National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) provide scholarships that allow elite sportspeople to stay and train, sometimes in association in conjunction with Australian Sports Commission in Canberra. Australian Sports Commission Australian Sports Commission offers a wide range of sports programmes, that cover a variety of sports, with a few of them geared towards athletes with disabilities. A few athletes could have the opportunity to train in other countries.
